Water Department
The original City of Clarion Water Treatment Plant was constructed in 1935. Additional filters were added in the late 1950s. The Plant was remodeled in 1998 to its current status. We added aeration and detention with chemical oxidation for iron and manganese removal. We now have the capacity of producing 1,700 gallons per minute. We also have 575,000 gallons of overhead storage in our 2 water towers. The City of Clarion has 2 full time employees responsible for the operation and maintenance of the water system. This includes 25 miles of pipe and about 160 fire hydrants to maintain. A new lab was added in 1998 to facilitate the required daily testing of the water supply. The water supply currently has approximately 1,200 accounts.
Wastewater Department
The original treatment plant consisted of a trickling filter plant. Because of new standards the plant was demolished in 1988 and a new 3 cell aerated lagoon system was constructed. This technology has served very well but is nearing the end of its purpose. With increased standards the City of Clarion will need to be looking at replacing this technology with some method of treatment that will meet today's effluent standards. We have 20 some miles of collection system and 4 lift stations to maintain as well as the required testing to meet the current effluent standards. With increased standards the City of Clarion along with many Iowa Cities will be forced to look at new treatment methods to comply with today's needs. |
